Glass food containers are sold as oven safe across the board, and there are two quite different materials behind that phrase.
The Two Types
Soda-lime glass is the standard, cheap and widely used. Heat-strengthened or tempered, it becomes considerably tougher and gains some thermal tolerance.
Borosilicate glass contains boron oxide, which reduces how much the glass expands when heated. Less expansion means less internal stress when temperatures change, which is why it handles heat swings far better.
Both can be labelled oven safe. They do not behave the same way.
Why Expansion Is the Whole Story

Read the Product, Not the Range
The practical advice. Where a manufacturer offers both, the material is stated on individual listings and frequently reflected in the price.
A borosilicate line sold at a premium alongside standard glass is telling you the rest of the range is something else.
Freezer to Hot Oven Is Never Advisable
Whatever the glass. Manufacturers sometimes describe this as possible, and the safer practice is to let a frozen dish stand or move it to a refrigerator first.
The temperature difference between a freezer and a hot oven is the largest swing a kitchen produces, and there is nothing to gain by testing it.
Never Under a Grill
Intense radiant heat on one surface is exactly the uneven heating that causes failure, and most glass is not rated for it.
Chips Weaken It
A chipped or deeply scratched dish is more likely to fail and should be retired.
